Who came by looking for you
Wild flowers in his hand
Still jeweled with the early mornin' dew

Said he'd come to rescue you
And take you far away from me
You had a right to life and love
Free from your father's tyranny

Said I had no right to work you
Like a mule under under the sun
You told him I'd visit you by moonlight
And all the awful things I'd done

I laughed and told him he'd been fooled
By those green eyes of yours

He coloured and pulled a .38
In the morning light the barrel glistened
You'd told him I'd speak naught but lies
And he and wasn't to listen

The courage he'd taken from liquor
