about

This 19 song set sees Reverend Moon takes on current events like the (then) upcoming American election with a paean to Bernie ("Wickerman, Wickerman") and a satirical portrait of Trump supporters ("Remember The Redcoats"). In the aftermath of the Jian Ghomeshi trial and acquittal he wrote "The Court of The Knife" (pointedly in M.Gira's solo-acoustic style). Deniers of white privilege get targeted in "Ain't Got The Blues" and "The Lonesome Death of Rosie Brown" is a heart-breaking fictionalized account of missing and murdered indigenous women and police brutality in an anonymous but all too recognizable small Canadian city. Interspersed between these tracks are vignettes and prophecies of a Mad Max-like societal collapse accelerated by climate change. In short, this is good-time music to fiddle while the world burns.

Track Name: A Child's Eyelash
All the towers we have made
Glass and steel and tile
Will crumble, fall and fade
Return us to the wild
of tooth and claw
A new suburban jungle law
The crop on which your neighbors feed
Could be the flesh of your own seed

All the riches you have stashed
Will be turned to smoking ash
Tomorrow reaps what today you sow
Broken teeth cannot chew on gold
The lucky will live to see their loved ones sold
As cities burn to bones and ash
Nothing left but a child's eyelash
A child's eyelash
Track Name: Poorman Thief
Richman, poorman, beggarman thief
No one knows where to get relief
An ounce of pleasure buys a pound of grief
And Dolly's in bed with the police chief
Church got a van full of belief
And Mama finds solace in the burning leaf
Burn an acre for a pound of beef
And the Ship of State is caught on the reef

Poorman, beggarman, richman, Death
Everyone breathes one final breath
Baby Jane's high on crystal meth
and made a bong from the skull of Queen Elizabeth
Can't find Jesus 'cause he's gone out west
And he ain't comin' back until we pass the test
The jury's rigged and the judge confessed
There's a cuckoo in the President's nest

Beggarman, richman, poorman, cop
The man with a gun comes out on top
With a boom, boom, boom and a pop, pop, pop
The crying starts when the shooting stops
Call the police if you feel you must
Well there ain't no authority you can trust
Coughing up lead and asbestos dust
Bake it in pie for the upper crust

Richman, poorman, beggarman, child
Going south since the west was wild
Like his women young and burritos mild
Spent another night out on the tiles
Found him in bed with Baby Jane
Rode him out of town on a cattle train
Branded his cock with the mark of Cain
He'll be back with the summer rains

Poorman, beggarman, richman, God
He blessed everybody's piece of sod
Accuse each other of holy fraud
Like back in the days with old Nimrod
Keep building towers and electric stairs
They're all empty but no one cares
Judge a man by what he wears
Bring back the noose and electric chairs

Richman, poorman, beggarman thief
No one knows where to get relief
Track Name: Wickerman, Wickerman
Wickerman, Wickerman, what'cha gonna do 'round here?
Wickerman, Wickerman, save us from our fears
Rats in the chickens, snake in the well
What'cha gonna do 'round here?
Mice in the kitchen, bats in the bells
Save us from our fears

Wickerman, Wickerman, what'cha gonna do for me?
Wickerman, Wickerman, ain't you gonna set me free?
Bears in the trash, reading my mail
What'cha gonna do for me?
Kitten's in the paper sellin' her tales
Ain't you gonna set me free, boy?
Ain't you gonna set me free?
What'cha gonna do for me, boy?
What'cha gonna do for me?
Track Name: Behind The Barn
I chased off the young man
Who came by looking for you
Wild flowers in his hand
Still jeweled with the early mornin' dew

Said he'd come to rescue you
And take you far away from me
You had a right to life and love
Free from your father's tyranny

Said I had no right to work you
Like a mule under under the sun
You told him I'd visit you by moonlight
And all the awful things I'd done

I laughed and told him he'd been fooled
By those green eyes of yours
You're not my daughter, you're my wife
And you done this kinda thing before

He coloured and pulled a .38
In the morning light the barrel glistened
You'd told him I'd speak naught but lies
And he and wasn't to listen

I told him it happens every May
and I really wish it weren't the truth
But after the snows melt away
You finds yourself another foolish youth

That's about the time I smelt it
The courage he'd taken from liquor
I saw his finger shaking on the trigger
He was quick, but I was quicker

I chased off the young man
Who came by early this morn
Couldn't say what became of him
But there's another mound behind the barn
Track Name: The Parable of The Rat
The rat sang his parable from the garbage can
The mice listened and sang along
On pews of pots and pan

Ten dead men played a revielle
From the Blue Boy's horn
Little Bo Peep killed her sheep
And lit fire to the corn

The magpie stole the parable
And changed all but one word
The rats and mice joined his flock
Inspired by the message they heard

Ten dead cats and skin a man
A dog can double the score
You can hear it late night
The scratching under the floor
The scratching under the floor
The scratching under the floor
Track Name: From a Buick 666
He wakes in the night to the sound of grinding teeth
and rain falling on the rusted hood of a dead automobile
with a glove box full of knuckle bones

A breeze creeps through the window
like a thief with a taste for spider venom milked
in the cinnamon patch

He'd been dreaming of fish

No one's tasted fresh water in eight years
but the memory still sits on his tongue
like a guest who won't leave

He returns to sleep with the hope he won't wake
pulled up to his chin the the folds of the blanket
woven from strips of shredded prom dresses

But as always he wakes in the morning
the sun a little hotter, the dust a little drier
crabs crawl across his scorched retinas
he sees only graveyard crosses made of children's bones

He puts a cracked china cup to his lips and tastes blood
Track Name: How Will You Find Your Way?
With nothing but candlelight
How will you find your way?
With nothing but candlelight
How will you find your way?
When the wind blows and takes your flame
Ain't no one but yourself to blame
With nothing but candlelight
How will you find your way?

No compass and no folding map
How will you find your way?
No compass and no folding map
How will you find your way?
When your tire blows and you got no spare
Blame yourself for getting no where
Track Name: Dark Skies
What do they say about the sky at night?
Sailors take warning or sailors' delight?
Through the city smog, the sun is ruby red
And I'm not sailor and fish wash up dead

Dark skies, you cannot see the stars
The only twinkle are the lights of distant cars
Dark skies, sailors beware
The only lights are towers in the air

What do they say about the ocean blue?
It's full of sharks in the deep dark and they're waiting for you
And on the dusty plain where wheat gave way to stones
Eagle feathers in the dirt among the bisons' bones

Dark skies, black as false pity
The only twinkle are the lights of distant cities
Dark skies, beware upon the ground
The only lights are planes coming down

What do they say about the morning sky?
If it's blue or if it's red, we're all gonna die
I saw the blazing sun through the purple haze
A skywriter wrote "These are the final days"

Dark skies, you cannot see the stars
The only twinkle are the lights of distant cars
Dark skies, sailors beware
The only lights are towers in the air
Track Name: What's Comin'
What'cha know about what's comin'?
What'cha know about tomorrow?
Do you hear the distant drummin'?
Do you know the comin' sorrow?

You can smell it on the breeze
A brand new kind of weather
The pheromones of dying bees
Hot metal and burning leather

And there's those who still believe
A helping hand hides a butcher knife
But they'll climb a pyramid of butchered babies
for a chance at a better life

What'cha know about what's comin'?
What'cha know about tomorrow?
Do you hear the distant drummin'?
Do you know the comin' sorrow?

There's enough to go around
We could even feed the dead
But half the world is overweight
and the other half is underfed

We're all in the same jalopy
The tank is empty and the tire's flat
You got the gas and I got the spare
but we're stranded here 'cause neither will share

What'cha know about what's comin'?
What'cha know about tomorrow?
Do you hear the distant drummin'?
Do you know the comin' sorrow?

In the land of oportunity
Work hard and collect your due
But not all of us together
Each alone, the chosen few

Everyone feels on the ropes
Everybody feels the blues
The game is rigged on false hope
For every winner, a million lose

What'cha know about what's comin'?
What'cha know about tomorrow?
Do you hear the distant drummin'?
Do you know the comin' sorrow?
Track Name: Ain't Got The Blues
Put your money on a sure thing
and every time you lose
I feel for you, son
but you ain't got the blues
You can't go out dancing
'cause there's a rock in your shoes
I get that you're hurtin'
But you ain't got the blues

On a bus bound for glory
feels like someone's been loosening the screws
But if they let you sit up front
you ain't got the blues
Your great grandpa got to keep his name
and didn't die in a noose
You might not have fame or fortune
But you ain't got the blues

Your children won't end up dead on the news
You ain't got the blues

When Smokey pulls you over
you won't end up bruised
You just gotta pay that ticket
You ain't got the blues
You lay your problems on the doorstep
Of the blacks or the Muslims or the Jews
I know you been disappointed
But you ain't got the blues

Just because you gotta pay your dues
You ain't got the blues

You can play the tune on the ones and twos
But you ain't got the blues
Track Name: The Court of The Knife
No one has to know
and we'll put him on death row
Don't go to the police
Let me tell you what happened to my niece

She pressed charges after she'd been defiled
But it was her who ended up on trial
They called into question what she'd done
before and after he'd had his fun

He was acquitted though everybody knew
What he'd done and what again he'd do
What he'd done and what again he would do

So no one has to know
and we'll put the bastard on death row
If he should die mysteriously
they'll have no reason to connect him to me

The police will have no clue
it was because of what he'd done to you
So keep it secret, keep it close
Justice is blind to what's right under its nose
Justice is always blind to what's under its nose

So no one has to know
and we'll put him on death row
They'll never believe a word you say
The system is rigged to make the victim pay

But he won't be acquitted in the court of the knife
A soul for a soul, a life for a life
A soul for a soul, and a life for a life
Track Name: Awakening
After you awaken
the forsaken
you can wake yourself

Spirits broken
can be woken
and nursed to health

But we've forgotten the words
Or maybe we never heard
Too busy to listen
gazing at all that glistens

After the flood comes
and the blood runs
we will start to heal

After the glass walls
shatter and fall
we will build what's real

But we've forgotten how
to turn swords to plows
It's easier the other way
Bring on the Judgement Day!

After we've woken
a world that's broken
then what will we do?

Those what awaken
will feel forsaken
and reject what's true

We always reject what's true
Track Name: The Lonesome Death of Rosie Brown
I wasn't there the day Jackie Brown
Rolled down the hill and into town
Not even a pail to fetch his water
And he met Jill, the mountie's daughter
There's many versions of the tale they tell
How he ended up in that jail cell
Robbed a band or a liquor store
Stabbed a dealer while trying to score
Mugged a priest and shot him dead
Or seduced young Jill when his skin was red

Two details are the same every time
There's no record of his crime
Thrown in jail without being booked
Somehow the paperwork got overlooked
The other thing that doesn't change
No matter how the stories range
When the church rang its morning bell
They found Jackie hanging in his cell

Must've been the guilt over whatever he'd done
This weren't no frame-up job with a thrown-down gun
It weren't the mountie who'd choked out his breath
Had an alibi for the time of death
At home with Jill while Jackie swung dead
At least that's what the constable said
Everybody knows, everybody says
Would never have happened if Jackie stayed on the rez

So why did Jackie roll down the hill?
His sister was missing, probably killed
Posted her picture all over town
And a girl named Jill thought she'd seen her around
Saw her get in a car with a man Jill knew
With a badge of gold and a vest of blue
Six months ago, or maybe more
No one notices one less squaw whore
Jill lead him to the station and showed him the man
Who put his sister in the back of a Crown Vic sedan
She waited outside until she heard the shouts
Jackie walked in but he never walked out

At dinner that night the mountie's daughter
Passed the salt and asked her father
What happened to the man who rolled into town
Looking for the missing Rosie Brown
He said it weren't no concern of hers
And asking questions would only make it worse
Everybody knows, everybody says
Would never have happened if they'd stayed on the rez

No one's talking, but everyone knows
What happened to Jackie and his sister Rose
Track Name: Remember The Redcoats
Somebody hid the milk
Somebody hid the honey
'Cause I can't buy a new car
Ain't got no money
They say the game's rigged
Broken as a lame pig
Ain't what I voted for
Didn't vote to be poor
Ain't like it used to be
Like it was on TV
When everybody got some
If you didn't you bought some
Now their ain't none
Glen, get your shotgun!
Remember the Redcoats
Find us a scapegoat
Came in on a slave boat
Never should'a let 'em vote
That's when it went down hill
The soldiers all got killed
We used to win at war
We don't win 'em no more
But keep on workin' hard
Someday you'll get there
Hasn't worked so far
Someday I'll get my share
They took it for the medicare
They took it for the welfare
Now I'm livin' on food stamps
Put 'em in a death camp
Build a wall, keep 'em out!
Then I have no doubt
I'll find my milk and honey then
Finally get my money then
They say if I work hard
I'll get myself a fast car
If you see me drive by
Don't put your thumb up in the sky
I ain't givin' you a lift
No free ride, no gift
Get there on your own steam
Gotta be your own team
'Cause it's all been a big lie
Mom never baked an apple pie
Don't matter if you try
So somebody gotta die!

Find us a scapegoat
Remember the Redcoats
Find us a scapegoat
Remember the Redcoats
Track Name: Skeleton Milk
Baby Jane opens the door
steps into the light
cracks open a beer can
and pours milk on the sidewalk

Like Jason planting dragon's teeth
a crop of skeletons rise
Stalks of corn
in the dimming light

Mary, quite contrary, steal the golden fleece
from Little Bo Peep
But Baby Jane knows the fleece is a myth
The big lie everyone believes

Meanwhile the Peter Pumpkin Eaters
are killing their wives
and burying them in pumpkin shells
No one notices
until the neighbours start complaining of smells
Nothing like property values dropping
to get the coppers hopping

Baby Jane knows how it goes
Boys will be boys will be boys will be boys

She's got her skeletons to keep her company
Don't we all?
As the spring rains start to fall
and the milk is washed away

Tiny white rivulets
crawling like blind worms
A negative image of blood
Like that night
when the end began
Track Name: Rabbit Run, Eagle Fly
Run, run, watch the rabbit run
Right into the coyote's mouth

Fly, fly, watch the eagle fly
Right into the volcano's mouth

When the time comes
Where will your run?
With the flooding tide
Where will you hide?
Track Name: Desolation Train
It's the way the world ends
Not with a whimper
It's the way the world ends
Not bang
Not with Revelation psalms
Not with atomic bombs
Not with a boom boom boom
Not with a klang klang klang
But the desolation train keeps rattlin' along

Two by two, men in blue
Keep stirring the pot
So one day your neighbor
notices you got what he don't got
Keep stirring the pot
One day you notice your neighbor
got what you don't got
Keep stirring the pot
The desolation train keeps rattlin' along

It's the way the world ends
With a rebel yell crying "More! More! More!"
Everybody wants some
I want some too
The desolation train keeps rattlin' along
Keep stirring the pot
The desolation train keeps rattlin' along
Track Name: The Price
Warm hands, warm eyes
This human touch, these human ties
Swaddle us night and day
Leave us naked when torn away

There's a price that we pay
For being loved and to love
There is a price that we pay

Soft skin, warm fur
A lover's voice, a kitten's purr
Never free, there is a cost
Solace we find is always lost

There's a price that we pay
For being loved and to love
There is a price that we pay

Promises, lullabies
Swoon from kisses and Lulled by lies
A tender look, a song is sung
The tenterhooks on which we're hung

There's a price that we pay
For being loved and to love
There is a price that we pay
