A Child's Eyelash
02:18
|
|||
All the towers we have made
Glass and steel and tile
Will crumble, fall and fade
Return us to the wild
of tooth and claw
A new suburban jungle law
The crop on which your neighbors feed
Could be the flesh of your own seed
All the riches you have stashed
Will be turned to smoking ash
Tomorrow reaps what today you sow
Broken teeth cannot chew on gold
The lucky will live to see their loved ones sold
As cities burn to bones and ash
Nothing left but a child's eyelash
A child's eyelash

Wickerman, Wickerman
01:25
|
|||
Wickerman, Wickerman, what'cha gonna do 'round here?
Wickerman, Wickerman, save us from our fears
Rats in the chickens, snake in the well
What'cha gonna do 'round here?
Mice in the kitchen, bats in the bells
Save us from our fears
Wickerman, Wickerman, what'cha gonna do for me?
Wickerman, Wickerman, ain't you gonna set me free?
Bears in the trash, reading my mail
What'cha gonna do for me?
Kitten's in the paper sellin' her tales
Ain't you gonna set me free, boy?
Ain't you gonna set me free?
What'cha gonna do for me, boy?
What'cha gonna do for me?

Skeleton Milk
01:31
|
|
||
Baby Jane opens the door
steps into the light
cracks open a beer can
and pours milk on the sidewalk
Like Jason planting dragon's teeth
a crop of skeletons rise
Stalks of corn
in the dimming light
Mary, quite contrary, steal the golden fleece
from Little Bo Peep
But Baby Jane knows the fleece is a myth
The big lie everyone believes
Meanwhile the Peter Pumpkin Eaters
are killing their wives
and burying them in pumpkin shells
No one notices
until the neighbours start complaining of smells
Nothing like property values dropping
to get the coppers hopping
Baby Jane knows how it goes
Boys will be boys will be boys will be boys
She's got her skeletons to keep her company
Don't we all?
As the spring rains start to fall
and the milk is washed away
Tiny white rivulets
crawling like blind worms
A negative image of blood
Like that night
when the end began

The Parable of The Rat
02:12
|
|||
The rat sang his parable from the garbage can
The mice listened and sang along
On pews of pots and pan
Ten dead men played a revielle
From the Blue Boy's horn
Little Bo Peep killed her sheep
And lit fire to the corn
The magpie stole the parable
And changed all but one word
The rats and mice joined his flock
Inspired by the message they heard
Ten dead cats and skin a man
A dog can double the score
You can hear it late night
The scratching under the floor
The scratching under the floor
The scratching under the floor

Dark Skies
02:33
|
|||
What do they say about the sky at night?
Sailors take warning or sailors' delight?
Through the city smog, the sun is ruby red
And I'm not sailor and fish wash up dead
Dark skies, you cannot see the stars
The only twinkle are the lights of distant cars
Dark skies, sailors beware
The only lights are towers in the air
What do they say about the ocean blue?
It's full of sharks in the deep dark and they're waiting for you
And on the dusty plain where wheat gave way to stones
Eagle feathers in the dirt among the bisons' bones
Dark skies, black as false pity
The only twinkle are the lights of distant cities
Dark skies, beware upon the ground
The only lights are planes coming down
What do they say about the morning sky?
If it's blue or if it's red, we're all gonna die
I saw the blazing sun through the purple haze
A skywriter wrote "These are the final days"
Dark skies, you cannot see the stars
The only twinkle are the lights of distant cars
Dark skies, sailors beware
The only lights are towers in the air

From a Buick 666
01:25
|
|
||
He wakes in the night to the sound of grinding teeth
and rain falling on the rusted hood of a dead automobile
with a glove box full of knuckle bones
A breeze creeps through the window
like a thief with a taste for spider venom milked
in the cinnamon patch
He'd been dreaming of fish
No one's tasted fresh water in eight years
but the memory still sits on his tongue
like a guest who won't leave
He returns to sleep with the hope he won't wake
pulled up to his chin the the folds of the blanket
woven from strips of shredded prom dresses
But as always he wakes in the morning
the sun a little hotter, the dust a little drier
crabs crawl across his scorched retinas
he sees only graveyard crosses made of children's bones
He puts a cracked china cup to his lips and tastes blood

The Court of The Knife
03:14
|
|||
No one has to know
and we'll put him on death row
Don't go to the police
Let me tell you what happened to my niece
She pressed charges after she'd been defiled
But it was her who ended up on trial
They called into question what she'd done
before and after he'd had his fun
He was acquitted though everybody knew
What he'd done and what again he'd do
What he'd done and what again he would do
So no one has to know
and we'll put the bastard on death row
If he should die mysteriously
they'll have no reason to connect him to me
The police will have no clue
it was because of what he'd done to you
So keep it secret, keep it close
Justice is blind to what's right under its nose
Justice is always blind to what's under its nose
So no one has to know
and we'll put him on death row
They'll never believe a word you say
The system is rigged to make the victim pay
But he won't be acquitted in the court of the knife
A soul for a soul, a life for a life
A soul for a soul, and a life for a life

Awakening
02:05
|
|||
After you awaken
the forsaken
you can wake yourself
Spirits broken
can be woken
and nursed to health
But we've forgotten the words
Or maybe we never heard
Too busy to listen
gazing at all that glistens
After the flood comes
and the blood runs
we will start to heal
After the glass walls
shatter and fall
we will build what's real
But we've forgotten how
to turn swords to plows
It's easier the other way
Bring on the Judgement Day!
After we've woken
a world that's broken
then what will we do?
Those what awaken
will feel forsaken
and reject what's true
We always reject what's true

Rabbit Run, Eagle Fly
01:41
|
|
||
Run, run, watch the rabbit run
Right into the coyote's mouth
Fly, fly, watch the eagle fly
Right into the volcano's mouth
When the time comes
Where will your run?
With the flooding tide
Where will you hide?

The Price
03:51
|
|||
Warm hands, warm eyes
This human touch, these human ties
Swaddle us night and day
Leave us naked when torn away
There's a price that we pay
For being loved and to love
There is a price that we pay
Soft skin, warm fur
A lover's voice, a kitten's purr
Never free, there is a cost
Solace we find is always lost
There's a price that we pay
For being loved and to love
There is a price that we pay
Promises, lullabies
Swoon from kisses and Lulled by lies
A tender look, a song is sung
The tenterhooks on which we're hung
There's a price that we pay
For being loved and to love
There is a price that we pay
